Suranjan Bhanja

Profile

I (Suranjan Bhanja) had some flair for sketching and painting right from my childhood.

I used to spend a lot of time observing idols during the pujas and mostly painted pictures of Gods and Goddesses. This way, I got lots of praise from both my grandmothers who were indeed impressed by my piety. My parents (Mira and Nirendranath) and my sister (Nilanjana) always encouraged me. While at Hindi High School (now Birla High School),l had the privilege of learning art at the feet of my Guru, the renowned artist Sri. Phanibhushan. He taught me with care and also sent some of my works to exhibitions in India and abroad. Some awards that I won and a few good press reviews encouraged me to continue with my hobby. However, I had to give up painting after shifting to South Point High School. Thereafter, I completely lost touch with painting while at IIT Kharagpur. At IIT, I used to satisfy my urge for painting by drawing cartoons, but looking back, it ruined my portrait painting skills.

My Age Old Hobby

Later, I travelled around the world on business and always loved hopping from one museum to the other. I stood completely dazed in front of the works of the great European painters at the museums of Amsterdam, London, Paris, St. Petersburg! Oriental paintings at the galleries of Beijing, Taipei and Tokyo were equally mesmerising. At home in India, I indeed fell in love with the Bengal School and the immortal creations of our great artists. Meanwhile, during 1977 to 2012, tough career goals and professional pressure, made me totally forget that I could paint ever. My niece, (Oindrila) ushered me back into my long lost world in 2013. I was in my late fifties by that time, but got hooked to my age old hobby ever since then!

Here is a humble presentation from a seasoned business professional of 65 + years who loves to paint just for relaxation. As the great Maestro Abanindranath Tagore, wrote, a painter is the only one who enjoys complete freedom. Colours needn’t obey rules. You can paint whatever you wish to. Art is undoubtedly the best stress buster.

To add a few more words, I occasionally go out on family holidays and love taking photos. I am no photographer at all and am often reprimanded by photography guru, who is none other than my son (Trinanjan). I keep shooting anyway and some pictures taken at random have come out perhaps better than my usual ones. I have tried to pick and choose some of those for you. The locations are mostly forests and around old relics. But these are the places that I love the most!

Last but not the least, I would thank my wife (Swati) for supporting me and encouraging me constantly to pursue my hobbies!
